LA at Night
Dunn-Edwards DEFD48
RGB 61, 94, 106
Dunn-Edwards publishes an LRV of about 10 for LA at Night.
This page lists the 1,539 colors whose names start with L, each on a swatch with its RGB value, hex code, shade and maker; the next letter loads as you scroll. The whole list, A to Z, starts on the List of Colors.
The list covers the named colors of the web, the colors every browser knows by name, with the numbered variants of the X11 color list they grew from; brand colors whose owners publish their screen values, such as Android Green; the paint colors of Resene, Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Dunn-Edwards, PPG, Glidden, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux Australia, Asian Paints, Nerolac and Jotun, each with the screen value its maker publishes; Pantone’s cotton (TCX) colors for fashion and interiors and a few of its paper (TPG) colors, with the screen values a Pantone dealer publishes; a few Crayola colors; and the color names of the xkcd color survey, a 2010 online survey in which people named colors shown on their screens. Pantone sells its own screen values under license, so its rows give a dealer’s screen approximation; match a physical Pantone guide when an exact color matters. RAL offers its screen values in licensed digital libraries, which this edition does not use, so RAL names are left out rather than shown with values copied from other sites. A few Crayola colors are included where Crayola’s own website shows the value; these are screen previews, not measurements of the crayons. A screen value is a maker’s published digital approximation, so paint on a wall looks different in daylight and lamplight, and on a different finish.
Letters go live one at a time; colors starting with A and B were checked on Oct. 11, 2026.
The same name often belongs to several makers, each with its own color. Afterglow, for one, is a golden ochre at Resene, a soft apricot at Sherwin-Williams, a pale lemon at Dunn-Edwards and a cream in Pantone’s range. That is normal: every maker names its own colors, and no body controls color names. So each version gets its own plate, and the line under the name says whose color it is.
A screen makes every color from three lights: red, green and blue. In the 8-bit sRGB system used on the web, each is set to a number from 0, off, to 255, full strength, and the three numbers together are the RGB value. 0, 0, 0 is black, 255, 255, 255 is white, and 255, 0, 0 is the most saturated red sRGB can show. That gives 256 × 256 × 256, or 16,777,216, possible codes, which is a count of codes rather than of every color the eye can see; screens also differ in the colors they can show.
A hex code writes the same three numbers in base 16, the counting system with the digits 0 to 9 and A to F, two digits for each light, after a # sign. Alice Blue shows how it works:
240 is 15 sixteens and 0 ones, and 15 is written F, so 240 becomes F0. A paint chip is a different thing: it reflects light rather than giving it off, so a paint maker’s RGB value is a published digital approximation of the paint, not the paint itself, and a hex code is not an ink or paint recipe.
Some paint notes give a light reflectance value (LRV): the share of light a painted surface reflects, on a scale of 0 to 100. A color has a note only when there is a fact worth telling, such as where its name comes from or how its maker describes it.
Each color gets exactly one shade, worked out from its RGB value rather than from its name. The value is first read in OKLCH, a perceptual color model that approximates how the eye judges lightness (L), chroma or colorfulness (C) and hue (h); OKLCH gives the coordinates, and the twelve shades are GKBook’s own browsing convention. A color with low chroma is white when very light, black when very dark and gray otherwise, and a very light color with only a faint tint counts as white. Every other color is placed by its hue on the wheel below. Reds, oranges and yellows that are dark or muted count as brown, which is why beige, tan and taupe land there; light reds count as pink; and in the band between purple and red, light colors count as pink and darker ones as purple. Every color in the list is then checked by eye against these definitions, and where the eye and the rule differ, the checked shade is used: a blue gray with a clear blue cast goes to blue, a golden mustard to yellow and an olive to green or brown as it looks. Alice Blue and Azure, two web colors, are such pale tints that they are grouped with white; their blue and cyan casts show on their swatches.
Each shade has its own page: Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Violet, White, Yellow.

Labyrinth
Resene V57-021-309
RGB 120, 106, 127
Labyrinth appears around 1400 for a maze or a large building full of winding passages, from Latin labyrinthus and Greek labyrinthos, the name of the structure Daedalus built near Knossos on Crete to hold the Minotaur. Its true origin is unknown and probably pre Greek, and the traditional account links it to Lydian labrys, a double headed ax that stood for royal power, so the word might mean palace of the double axes. Robert Beekes calls that link speculative and compares the word instead with laura, a pre Greek word for a narrow street or passage.

Lacewing
Sherwin-Williams SW 6729
RGB 215, 227, 202
Lacewing, also lace wing, named an insect with finely veined wings in 1847, perhaps shortened from lace winged fly, which is recorded from 1826. Lace came into English in the early 13th century as laz or las, a braided cord, from Old French laz (net, noose, snare) and Latin laqueus (noose, snare), the same source as lasso, and it began as a hunting and trapping word. Lace for an open patterned fabric dates from the 1550s, and while the word is often traced to an Italic base meaning to ensnare, the scholar de Vaan rejects that because the sounds do not fit. Sherwin-Williams reports an LRV of about 73.7 for Lacewing.

Lagoon is recorded as laguna in the 1610s and lagune in the 1670s, first for the waters around Venice, from French lagune or straight from Italian laguna (pond, lake). The Italian word goes back to Latin lacuna (pond, hole), from lacus (pond), the source also of lake and lacuna. Captain Cook applied it in 1769 to the lakelike water enclosed by a South Seas atoll.

RGB 192, 153, 114
Lanyard was first a small rope or cord used aboard ships, recorded from the 1620s, when English readopted French lanier, from Old French laniere (thong, strap of leather). An earlier borrowing, lainer or lanere, had meant a strap for fastening armor or clothing in the early 14th century, and the French word traces back through a Germanic source to an Indo European root meaning to knot or tie. The modern spelling was bent by the unrelated nautical yard, the long beam that supports a sail. Sherwin-Williams publishes an LRV of about 35.2 for Lanyard. Sherwin-Williams' older chart gives #BF9974 for Lanyard.

Lapis lazuli, the rich blue stone, is recorded from the early 15th century and means stone of azure, from Latin lapis (stone) and Medieval Latin lazuli, from Arabic lazuward. The chain runs back to Persian lajward, from Lajward, a place in Turkestan that Marco Polo named as the source of the stone. The same word gave Old French azur and English azure after its first l was mistaken for the French article.

Larkspur, recorded from the 1570s, is named for the likeness of the flower's calyx and petals to the long, straight hind claw, or spur, of the lark, and lark heel was another old name for it from the 1590s. Lark goes back to Old English lawerce and Proto Germanic laiwarikon, of unknown origin. The Old English and Old Norse forms suggest a compound perhaps meaning treason worker, but Etymonline notes that nothing in folklore explains such a name.

Laurel appears in the mid 14th century as a variant of lorrer (around 1300), from Old French laurier or lorier and Latin laurus, with the second r later changed to l. Latin laurus may be linked to Greek daphne (laurel), with d changing to l, or it may come from an older Mediterranean language spoken before the Indo European languages. The laurel came to stand for victory and distinction, and to rest on one's laurels is first recorded in 1831.

Lava entered English in 1750 from the dialect of Naples or Calabria, where lava meant a stream, first a rush of water after heavy rain and then the streams of molten rock from Vesuvius. The traditional account takes the Italian word from Latin lavare (to wash). A rival account links it to Latin labes (a falling), from labi (to slip, fall), the family that gave English lapse.

Lavender, the fragrant plant of the mint family, is first recorded around 1300, from Anglo French and Old French lavendre and Medieval Latin lavendula, of uncertain origin. One theory ties it to Latin lividus (bluish, livid), while another, which fits French lavande and Italian lavanda (a washing), traces it to Latin lavare (to wash), since the plant scented washed cloth and perfumed baths. Lavender as an adjective for pale purple dates from 1840 and as a noun for the color from 1882.

Lemon is recorded around 1400 as lymon, from Old French limon, which came through Provencal or Italian from Arabic laimun and Persian limun, and Arabs probably brought the fruit from India to the Levant in the ninth or 10th century. The word may ultimately come from an Austronesian language of the Malay Archipelago, with forms such as Malay limaw (citrus fruit, lime). Lemon drop for the candy dates from 1807, and lemongrass, named for its smell, from 1837.

Lemur has named the nocturnal mammals of Madagascar since 1795, a sense given by Linnaeus, who explained in Latin that he called them lemures because they roam mainly at night, slowly, somewhat like people. In Roman myth the lemures were evil spirits of the dead, and the origin of the word is uncertain. The scholar de Vaan thinks lemures and Greek lamia may both come from a non Indo European word, perhaps Anatolian or Etruscan, while Beekes finds no basis for linking the two. PPG describes Lemur as a dark, neutral, tree branch brown with an earthy undertone. PPG publishes an LRV of about 11 for Lemur.

Lentil

RGB 220, 200, 176
Lentil is recorded from the mid 13th century, from Old French lentille and Latin lenticula, a diminutive of lens, the Latin name for the plant and its seed. The optical lens took the same Latin word in the 1690s, because the glass has the double convex shape of a lentil. Similar words in Greek, German and Slavic look too close to be chance, but no shared ancestor can be rebuilt, so like other farming words it may have been borrowed from a non Indo European language in Europe. Behr publishes an LRV of about 60 for Lentil.

RGB 55, 134, 97
Leprechaun appears around 1600 from Irish lupracan, a reshuffled form of Old Irish luchorpan, usually explained as very small body, from lu (small) and corpan, a diminutive of corp (body), from Latin corpus. Recent Celtic scholarship offers a rival account tying it to the Luperci, youths who ran in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, whom later Irish scholars misread as a race that survived Noah's Flood, until a little Lupercus became the leprechaun. The Irish form leithbragan, from leith (half) and brog (brogue), is probably a folk etymology, since the sprite was thought to make or mend only one shoe.

Lettuce is recorded as letuse in the late 13th century, probably from the plural of Old French laitue, from Latin lactuca. The Latin word comes from lac (milk), for the milky juice of the plant, and it also gave Spanish lechuga and Italian lattuga. Old English had already borrowed the Latin word directly as lactuce.

Lichen came into English in 1715 from Latin lichen and Greek leichen (tree moss, lichen), which Etymonline glosses as what eats around itself. The Greek word probably comes from leichein (to lick). English, like Greek, also used it for eczema and some other skin conditions, and around 1600 it was applied to liverwort, then thought to be related.

Lily

Lily goes back to Old English lilie, from Latin lilia, the plural of lilium, which is related to Greek leirion and may be an altered borrowing from the eastern Mediterranean, perhaps like Coptic hleli (lily). Bible translators used it for Hebrew shoshanna, and lily of the valley renders lilium convallium in the Latin Vulgate, a literal translation from the Song of Songs that German herbalists of the 16th century apparently first gave to the plant. As an adjective, lily meant white, pure or charming in the 1530s.

The citrus lime is recorded from the 1630s, probably through Spanish lima or Portuguese limao from Arabic lima and Persian limun, with a possible link to Sanskrit nimbu and Malay limaw, and scholars Yule and Burnell believed English took it from the Portuguese in India. Lime green as a color dates from 1883. The lime tree, or linden, is an unrelated word from Old English lind, whose n probably shifted to m in compounds, and the chalky lime of mortar is another, from Old English lim (sticky substance, birdlime).

Linen, cloth woven from flax, appears in the early 14th century as the adjective linen (made of flax) used as a noun, built on Old English lin (flax, linen thread, linen cloth). The Germanic word was probably an early loan from Latin linum (flax), which with Greek linon is thought to come from a non Indo European source. Beekes allows that the word could be inherited from a shared Indo European origin, since flax has long been grown in central Europe, but he still thinks a Mediterranean origin more likely.

Linnet, a small finchlike songbird, is recorded from the 1530s, from French linette (grain of flax), a diminutive of lin (flax), from Latin linum. The bird was named for its diet, since flaxseed makes up much of what it eats, and German names it the same way with Hänfling, from Hanf (hemp). Its Old English name, linetwige, lives on in the dialect word lintwhite. Dulux Australia reports an LRV of about 55 for Linnet.

Litmus, a blue dye from certain lichens that turns red in acid and blue again in alkalis, is recorded in the early 14th century as lit mose. Its likeliest source is an Old Norse word related to Norwegian dialect litmose, from lita (to dye) and mos (moss), though it may be partly from Middle Dutch lijkmoes, and Watkins links the first part instead to Middle Dutch leken (to drip, leak). Litmus paper dates from 1803, and the figurative litmus test from 1957. Dulux Australia reports an LRV of about 37 for Litmus.

Livid meant bluish leaden in the early 15th century, from Old French livide and Latin lividus (bluish, black blue), from livere (to be bluish), which figuratively came to mean envious or spiteful. Its root may be shared with Russian sliva (plum), Welsh lliw (color) and Old English sla (sloe). Livid with rage dates from 1912, and Etymonline suggests the shift fits a rage that can flush one face dark red or leave another pale.

Lizard appears in the late 14th century as lusarde, from Anglo French lusard and Old French laisarde, from Latin lacerta, a word of unknown origin. Latin lacertus also meant the muscular upper arm, and it is unclear which sense came first, while the scholar de Vaan suggests a possible link to Greek likertizein (to jump, dance). Alligator comes from the same Latin word, through Spanish el lagarto (the lizard), the name people in the Americas gave the big reptile in the 1560s.

Lobster goes back to Old English loppestre, which meant both lobster and locust, a corruption of Latin locusta, which had both senses too, with the ending reshaped to the Old English suffix istre. The Oxford English Dictionary holds that the Latin word first meant a lobster and passed to the insect by likeness of shape, while de Vaan notes that the only similar Latin word is lacerta (lizard), perhaps a fellow borrowing from another language. The shift from c to p is unexplained, perhaps influenced by Old English loppe (spider).

Locust for the swarming insect came into English in the early 14th century from Old French languste and Latin locusta, which first meant a lobster or similar crustacean. The North American locust tree, named in the 1630s, took its name from the carob, called locust tree in the 1610s because its pods were said to look like the insect. Locust wood was famous for American police clubs in the late 19th century, and locust club is recorded from 1887.

Lodestar, recorded from the late 14th century, was an old name for the pole star, the star that leads the way in navigation, and it took the figurative sense of a guiding model in the same century. Lode is a Middle English spelling of load that kept its older sense of a way or course, from Old English lad and a Proto Germanic word related to Old Norse leið (road), from the same root as lead. German Leitstern and Danish ledestjerne are built the same way, and lodestone shares the first part.

Lollipop is first recorded in 1784 as lolly pops, soft candies made from molasses and sugar, and the candy on a stick came only in the 1920s. The Oxford English Dictionary calls its formation obscure, and it may join loll (to hang out, as the tongue does) and pop (a blow or slap), or it may come from lolly, a Northern English dialect word for tongue. The clipped lolly appears in 1854 and became British slang for money in the mid 20th century.

Lotus came into English as a plant name in the 1540s from Latin lotus and Greek lotos, a name given over time to several plants that are not closely related, among them various water lilies and the Egyptian white lotus, recorded from the 1580s. The word may be of Semitic origin, perhaps related to Hebrew lot (myrrh). Lotus eater, from the lotophagoi in Book IX of Homer's Odyssey, has meant since 1812 someone who enjoys an idle life, since the plant was thought to bring dreamy forgetfulness.

Lullaby, a soothing song sung to infants, is recorded from the 1580s as a noun use of lulley by (1560s), built on lullay, a common refrain in nursery songs, from the verb lull. Lull, recorded from the early 14th century, is probably imitative of a lu lu sound used to soothe children, with relatives such as Swedish lulla and German lullen. The by may be simply a meaningless extension, though by alone was a lulling sound around 1500. Resene lists Lullaby in its KidzColour range from before 2008.

Lupine

RGB 190, 156, 193
Lupine, also spelled lupin, has named the flowering plant since the late 14th century, from Latin lupinus, a noun use of an adjective meaning of a wolf, from lupus (wolf). Why the plant was named for the wolf is unclear, and one suggestion is that it was thought to harm the soil, in keeping with the wolf's destructive nature. Against that, the plant has been valued in modern Europe for improving sandy soil and in Portugal for choking out weeds.

Lyceum

Lyceum comes from Greek Lykeion, a grove on the eastern edge of ancient Athens with covered walks and athletic grounds, where Aristotle taught and gave his school its name. The place was named for a nearby temple of Apollo Lykeios, an epithet that probably meant, or was understood to mean, wolf, from lykos. Around 1820 an American lyceum was an institute that organized public lectures and the hall that held them, and French lycée, a public secondary school, comes from the same word. Lynx

Lynx is recorded from the mid 14th century, from Latin lynx and Greek lyngx, and Chaucer used it around 1380 in his Boethius, writing of the eyes of a beast called lynx. The name is usually linked to an Indo European root meaning light or brightness, for the animal's shining eyes or its sight in the dark. Etymonline notes sound problems with that link, and Beekes suggests the word may come from a non Indo European language. Dunn-Edwards publishes an LRV of about 8 for Lynx.

Not exactly. A screen value is the paint maker's best match for a screen; paint looks different under daylight, lamps and in the sample size, so check a real sample before you buy.
