Lullaby
Resene V87-014-352
RGB 226, 205, 213
Lullaby, a soothing song sung to infants, is recorded from the 1580s as a noun use of lulley by (1560s), built on lullay, a common refrain in nursery songs, from the verb lull. Lull, recorded from the early 14th century, is probably imitative of a lu lu sound used to soothe children, with relatives such as Swedish lulla and German lullen. The by may be simply a meaningless extension, though by alone was a lulling sound around 1500. Resene lists Lullaby in its KidzColour range from before 2008.

Lily
Resene V75-026-339
RGB 193, 159, 179
Lily goes back to Old English lilie, from Latin lilia, the plural of lilium, which is related to Greek leirion and may be an altered borrowing from the eastern Mediterranean, perhaps like Coptic hleli (lily). Bible translators used it for Hebrew shoshanna, and lily of the valley renders lilium convallium in the Latin Vulgate, a literal translation from the Song of Songs that German herbalists of the 16th century apparently first gave to the plant. As an adjective, lily meant white, pure or charming in the 1530s.
Lupine
Pantone 16-3521 TCX
RGB 190, 156, 193
Lupine, also spelled lupin, has named the flowering plant since the late 14th century, from Latin lupinus, a noun use of an adjective meaning of a wolf, from lupus (wolf). Why the plant was named for the wolf is unclear, and one suggestion is that it was thought to harm the soil, in keeping with the wolf's destructive nature. Against that, the plant has been valued in modern Europe for improving sandy soil and in Portugal for choking out weeds.

Orchid was introduced in 1845 by botanist John Lindley, from the family name Orchideae given by Linnaeus. It goes back through Latin orchis to Greek orkhis, a name the plant got from the shape of its root. Etymonline says the modern word is marred by an extra d, added in an attempt to extract the Latin stem.

The fuchsia shrub was named in 1703 by the French botanist Charles Plumier for the German botanist Leonhard Fuchs, who lived from 1501 to 1566 and whose surname means fox. Etymonline records the plant name in English by 1753 and the color sense from 1921, while Merriam-Webster dates the word's first known use to 1789. Despite the look, it is not related to the Latin fucus, a reddish seaweed that also gave its name to a red color.

Mulberry named the tree of the genus Morus around 1300 and the fruit in the 14th century. The Middle English morberie is either derived from or closely related to Middle High German mul beri, from Old High German mur beri, and both go back to Latin morum (mulberry, blackberry), probably from Greek moron. The color sense dates from about 1837, and a children's song with a mulberry tree refrain is recorded from the 1820s, first in Scotland.

Labyrinth

Labyrinth appears around 1400 for a maze or a large building full of winding passages, from Latin labyrinthus and Greek labyrinthos, the name of the structure Daedalus built near Knossos on Crete to hold the Minotaur. Its true origin is unknown and probably pre Greek, and the traditional account links it to Lydian labrys, a double headed ax that stood for royal power, so the word might mean palace of the double axes. Robert Beekes calls that link speculative and compares the word instead with laura, a pre Greek word for a narrow street or passage.

Amethyst
Pantone 18-3015 TCX

The name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning not drunken. The ancients believed the violet quartz prevented intoxication, and people wore amethyst rings while drinking. The word entered English in the late 13th century as amatist. The gemstone amethyst is purple quartz and can lean toward blue or red. This helps explain why amethyst-like colors need not occupy one narrow hue.
