What is the national flag of Malta?

Malta’s national flag has two equal vertical halves: white beside the flagpole and red at the free edge. A red-edged George Cross occupies the upper part of the white half. The present design dates from independence in 1964 and recalls the collective wartime courage honored in 1942.

The flag combines a simple bicolor with a detailed representation of a gallantry award. Its George Cross must not be confused with the eight-pointed Maltese cross used on Malta’s merchant flag. The normal rectangle is three units wide and two high. This guide separates constitutional requirements, official graphic guidance, historical evidence, and practical illustrations.

What does Malta’s flag look like?

Malta’s flag is a vertical white-and-red bicolor with a George Cross near the upper hoist. The white and red areas have equal widths. The cross is outlined in red and belongs entirely within the white half; no coat of arms or eight-pointed cross replaces it.

The hoist is the edge attached to the staff; the fly is the free edge. On the usual front view, white appears on the viewer’s left. The small emblem is an essential part of the design, even when it is difficult to see in a thumbnail.

What are the proportions of Malta’s flag?

The standard flag is three units wide and two units high, a width-to-height ratio of 3:2. The same shape is described as 2:3 when height is listed first. Each colored half occupies one-half of the total width and extends through the full height.

For a flag 150 centimeters wide, the height is 100 centimeters and each half is 75 centimeters wide. Labels such as “2:3” are ambiguous without an order: state width × height when giving a finished size. Article 3 defines the arrangement; the government’s graphic guidance supplies the numerical ratio.

How is the flag constructed, and do official drawings agree?

Begin with a 3:2 rectangle divided into equal vertical halves. The detailed George Cross requires a suitable reference drawing. Official technical documents disagree on a placement dimension, and the commonly used reference vector also contains interpretive dimensions. These educational downloads should therefore not be represented as certified manufacturing drawings.

The two G values are reproduced as printed, not silently reconciled. The 2008 page also says its drawing is for reference rather than reproduction. The 2024 annex permits specified tolerances, but its procurement period ended on January 25, 2026. It supplies dated technical evidence, not a current supply contract.

This package retains the reference vector’s complete emblem geometry and 3:2 field, while changing its white emblem fill to silver-gray. It does not assert that this drawing satisfies every inconsistent table entry. For official production, obtain the applicable approved artwork and tolerances from the responsible authority.

What are the official colors and digital color codes?

The 2008 government guide specifies white, black, and red, with red identified as Pantone 186 C, RGB 207, 20, 43, and HEX #CF142B. Its stated CMYK recipe is 0, 91, 76, 6. A later procurement specification explicitly describes the George Cross background as silver-gray.

Use the stated RGB value for this digital artwork. A printed textile still needs an appropriate physical color reference: screen brightness, printer profiles, inks, and fabric all affect appearance. The guide’s additional legacy “web safe” red is not the red used in these files.

Should the George Cross be silver-gray or gold?

The George Cross is a silver decoration, and the 2024 national-flag procurement annex calls for a silver-gray background with black details and red edging. This package follows that description. Its particular gray is an illustration value, since the cited annex does not prescribe a gray HEX or RGB code.

An educational booklet describes the cross as gold, while the 2008 color list does not name gray. Those descriptions should not outweigh the explicit silver-gray requirement in the later technical annex and the medal’s documented silver appearance. The original downloaded vector’s white emblem fill is corrected transparently in the artwork record.

What do the flag’s colors and George Cross mean?

The George Cross commemorates the courage of Malta’s people during the Second World War. White and red are the country’s established national colors. Article 3 describes them without assigning each a separate moral meaning, so familiar claims such as white meaning peace and red meaning sacrifice are not constitutional definitions.

Two panels distinguish the established white and red colors from the George Cross’s documented wartime meaning.
Figure 6. National colors and wartime remembrance The George Cross commemorates the 1942 award. The Constitution names the colors without assigning peace, purity or sacrifice definitions.GKBook

The strongest documented symbolism is the connection between the cross and the 1942 collective award. Distinguish that evidence from later interpretations of the colors. A student answer can explain the wartime remembrance confidently while describing the colors as inherited national identifiers.

Why is the George Cross on Malta’s flag?

King George VI awarded the George Cross to Malta in 1942 to recognize its people’s fortitude under devastating wartime attacks. The decoration became a lasting national symbol. Its inclusion in the flag preserves that collective memory; it is not a claim that Malta remains under British sovereignty today.

The award recognizes a community’s endurance, not a single Maltese recipient. The present constitutional flag retains a representation of that specific decoration. This explains why a British royal cypher survives within the emblem on the flag of an independent republic.

What details appear inside the George Cross?

The medal has four broad arms and a central circular scene of Saint George and the dragon. Around that scene are the words FOR GALLANTRY. The royal cypher GVI appears between the arms. Malta’s flag adds a red outline around the representation of this detailed silver decoration.

Enlarged silver-gray George Cross with a red border, black inscription, GVI cyphers and Saint George slaying the dragon.

GVI refers to George VI, the king who instituted the award. Keep the central scene, inscription, cyphers, and outline when preparing detailed artwork. A plain plus sign or an eight-pointed star-shaped cross loses the identifying features of the decoration.

Heritage Malta identifies the original George Cross among the highlights of the National War Museum at Fort St Elmo in Valletta. The flag carries a representation of the medal, rather than a separate badge invented for the republic.

Was the George Cross awarded in April or September 1942?

The award citation is dated April 15, 1942. The public presentation took place on September 13, 1942. Both dates are correct because they describe different events. Neither should be confused with September 21, 1964, when the present flag arrangement accompanied Malta’s independence.

DateEvent
April 15, 1942King George VI’s award citation
September 13, 1942Public presentation of the George Cross
September 21, 1964Independence and present constitutional flag

Heritage Malta’s 2025 archival research distinguishes the handwritten citation from the later ceremony. Giving the event as well as the date avoids treating the presentation as the award decision or making the current flag twenty-two years older than it is.

What are the main stages in Malta’s flag history?

Malta’s flag history brings together older white-and-red national colors, a wartime award in 1942, a George Cross on a blue canton before independence, and the present red-edged cross on white from 1964. These stages should be distinguished from later changes to the country’s official coat of arms.

Figure 10. Flag and constitutional milestones The timeline separates the award and presentation in 1942 from the independence flag of 1964 and republican status in 1974.GKBook; reference artwork: Orange Tuesday and Commons contributors

The London Gazette announced a royal warrant on February 22, 1944. The warrant added a George Cross on a blue canton to Malta’s armorial bearings. That original official notice concerns the arms; it should not be loosely quoted as an independent statute creating today’s flag.

Historical illustrations are valuable for showing visible changes, but they are reconstructions. The blue-canton specimen here retains its source’s 3:2 proportions and complete cross. It is not presented as a surviving wartime textile or confused with the colonial blue ensign.

Why did the older flag have a blue canton?

The earlier white-and-red flag displayed the George Cross on a blue area in the upper hoist. At independence in 1964, the blue background disappeared and a red border distinguished the cross directly against white. The historical blue-canton flag should therefore be labelled with its period rather than used as today’s national flag.

The change makes a useful visual comparison: the remembered award remains, while the blue patch is removed. The present constitution expressly requires red edging and places the cross in the white stripe. It does not require a blue rectangle behind the medal.

When was the present flag adopted?

The present white-and-red flag with a red-edged George Cross dates from September 21, 1964, Malta’s independence day. The 1964 Independence Order contains this design. Malta’s later transition to a republic in 1974 is a separate constitutional milestone and does not supply a new adoption date for this flag.

The Independence Order was made on September 2, 1964 and came into force on September 21. These are different legal dates. For a flag fact box, September 21 is the relevant independence-era starting point; the award’s April 1942 date belongs in the emblem’s history.

Did Count Roger give Malta its red and white colors?

A familiar tradition attributes Malta’s colors to Count Roger in 1091, sometimes through a story about a piece of his banner. The government’s educational account treats the attribution as unconfirmed. It is best presented as a national legend, not as a documented creation of the modern flag.

Historical identity often accumulates stories around symbols that are much older than their present legal definition. Separate the traditional account of the colors from the securely dated George Cross award and the independence constitution. Neither the modern emblem nor the current flag arrangement existed in 1091.

Who designed Malta’s flag and the George Cross?

Percy Metcalfe designed the George Cross medal. That does not make him the designer of Malta’s entire national flag. The flag combines inherited national colors with the awarded decoration and a constitutional arrangement. The primary legal texts consulted here do not name a single individual as the flag’s designer.

A design credit should specify its object: medal, flag drawing, or complete national flag. The modern SVG illustrators credited with these downloads reconstructed an existing national symbol; their artwork credit is not a claim to have invented the Maltese flag.

Is the George Cross the same as the Maltese cross?

No. The George Cross is a detailed gallantry medal with broad arms, a central scene, lettering, and royal cyphers. The Maltese cross has eight pointed tips. The latter appears on Malta’s merchant flag and other insignia, but it must not replace the George Cross on the national flag.

The Sovereign Order of Malta also has its own flags: its state flag carries a white Latin cross on red, while its works flag uses a white eight-pointed cross. These represent the Order, a separate institution, and are not alternative national flags of the Republic of Malta.

What is Malta’s merchant flag?

Malta’s merchant flag is a red rectangle with a white border and a white Maltese cross at its center. It is a separate maritime design, not the white-and-red national bicolor. Transport Malta also states that the merchant flag should not be used as a courtesy flag.

The Merchant Shipping Act identifies the flag in its Third Schedule as the proper national colors for Maltese ships. The government’s general flag guidance distinguishes civilian vessels, which use the merchant flag, from military vessels, which use the national flag as their ensign. Vessel operators should follow the rules applicable to their vessel.

What does Malta’s presidential flag look like?

Malta’s presidential flag has a blue field, the national emblem in the center, and a gold Maltese cross in each corner. Government guidance dates its introduction to a proclamation of December 12, 1988. It has the national flag’s proportions and identifies the President’s official presence and premises.

Figure 12. Presidential flag of Malta Blue field, complete national emblem, and four gold Maltese crosses. A separate flag of the presidency, introduced in 1988.GKBook; reference artwork: Guilherme Paula, Fry1989, Great Brightstar and Commons contributors

Its central emblem is a complete coat of arms, not simply the George Cross. A small thumbnail can hide the crown, wreath, ribbon, and shield, so a detailed reference is preferable. This separate flag should not be used as the standard picture of Malta’s national flag.

Does the national flag contain Malta’s coat of arms?

No. The national flag carries the George Cross in the white half, not the complete coat of arms. The national emblem instead places a heraldic version of the flag on a shield, with a mural crown, olive and palm branches, and a ribbon bearing the republic’s name.

The Emblem and Public Seal of Malta Act describes the crown as having eight turrets, five visible, and identifies the wreath branches as peace symbols. These surrounding elements belong to the emblem and the presidential flag’s central device; adding them to the national bicolor changes its design.

Which way should Malta’s flag face when displayed?

For a flat display, government guidance places the hoist on the audience’s left. The usual view therefore has white on the left, red on the right, and the George Cross near the upper left. Keep the flag’s complete shape and orientation instead of treating it as an interchangeable decorative color panel.

A real flag seen from behind is viewed from the opposite side of its staff; that is different from placing a front-view illustration backward. For classroom walls and web pages, the normal flat view is the clearest reference. The protocol does not support inventing a new tall flag by stretching the rectangle.

Does Malta have a flag day or national flag occasions?

Malta has five statutory national holidays: Freedom Day on March 31, Sette Giugno on June 7, Victory Day on September 8, Independence Day on September 21, and Republic Day on December 13. The holiday law does not designate a separate national holiday called Flag Day.

Figure 17. Malta’s five national holidays March 31, June 7, September 8, September 21 and December 13 are the five national holidays in Chapter 252.GKBook

Government guidance particularly encourages flag display at public institutions on national holidays. Independence Day is closely connected with the present flag’s history, while April 15 recalls the George Cross award. An anniversary connected with a symbol is not automatically a separate statutory public holiday.

When is the flag raised, and how should people show respect?

Official guidance describes outdoor display from sunrise to sunset, with nighttime display on special occasions preferably illuminated. It calls for brisk raising and ceremonial lowering. During raising, lowering, or a parade, those present face the flag and stand to attention; uniformed participants render the appropriate military salute.

The guidance also covers schools on school days and polling places on election days. When national flags appear together, it calls for separate staffs of equal height and flags of equal size. A public hall places Malta’s flag at the speaker’s right while facing the audience.

How is Malta’s flag flown at half-mast?

For half-mast display, official guidance says to raise the flag briefly to the peak, lower it slowly to the mourning position, and raise it to the peak again before lowering it for the day. Government buildings follow instructions issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

Three Malta flagpoles illustrate raising to the top, lowering for mourning, and returning to the top before lowering for the day.
Figure 16. Half-mast display sequence Raise to the peak, lower slowly to half-mast, and raise to the peak again before taking down the flag. Diagram is schematic.GKBook; reference artwork: MapGrid, Nightstallion, Denelson83, Zscout370, Yaddah, Kamran.nef and Commons contributors

The published wording describes half-mast as half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. The diagram shows the sequence schematically; it is not a measured rigging plan. A historical mourning announcement should not be mistaken for an instruction to lower flags today.

How is Malta’s flag placed on a coffin?

When the national flag covers a coffin, official guidance places the George Cross at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not touch the ground and should not be lowered into the grave. This coffin arrangement is a distinct instruction from flying a flag at half-mast.

“Left shoulder” refers to the person whose coffin is covered, not whichever side is left from a viewer’s position. Follow the ceremony’s responsible protocol officer when arranging the drape. The flat display shown elsewhere in this article is not a substitute for the coffin orientation.

How should Malta’s flag appear with the European Union flag?

The 2008 graphic guide places Malta’s flag to the left of the EU emblem, at the same size and on the same line, with consistent color or monochrome treatment. Physical flags on public buildings are also addressed in a separate 2004 circular, which calls for separate flagpoles.

Printed side-by-side graphics and actual flagstaff arrangements are different situations. The 2004 circular was issued for accession and public institutions, with additional arrangements for certain offices and entry points. It should not be turned into a blanket rule that every private home must fly both flags.

Can the flag or George Cross be used freely in a logo?

A downloadable image does not itself grant permission to incorporate Malta’s flag into a logo or other design. Chapter 253 requires written authority for incorporating the flag into a design, while Chapter 115 separately regulates the George Cross emblem and name. Copyright status and official-symbol restrictions are different questions.

The public-domain reference records and credits in this package explain the artwork’s copyright provenance. They are not government authorization for a new commercial design. Before such use, check the applicable requirements with the responsible Maltese authority. The law also addresses public vilification and defacement of the flag.

For ordinary care, keep the flag clean, dry, and free to fly or fall naturally. Avoid adding advertising, text, or extra insignia. The official guidance specifically discourages using the national flag as advertising or as drapery.

Which download size should be used for a school project?

Use the SVG when you need a scalable illustration and the PNG when your software requires a regular image file. The main PNG is 3600 by 2400 pixels. Preserve its 3:2 aspect ratio and leave the George Cross intact; cropping or stretching can remove essential identifying details.

At 300 pixels per inch, the main PNG corresponds to a 12 × 8 inch image before resampling. That is a calculated output size, not an official flag dimension. The separate historical, merchant, presidential, and naval images are labelled so they cannot be mistaken for the current national flag.

What is Malta’s flag emoji and country code?

Malta’s flag emoji is 🇲🇹, formed from the regional indicator letters M and T. Unicode lists the sequence as U+1F1F2 followed by U+1F1F9. Its appearance depends on the device or application, and some systems display letters instead of a flag image.

An emoji is convenient in informal text but unsuitable as a construction reference. Tiny platform artwork can simplify the George Cross, and it should not replace a detailed downloadable image when the design itself is the subject of a lesson.

What are the most common mistakes in Malta flag artwork?

Common mistakes include omitting the George Cross, substituting an eight-pointed Maltese cross, reversing the white and red halves, or keeping the historical blue canton in a current illustration. Another error is presenting the merchant or presidential flag as the national flag. Check the design, date, and intended use together.

  • Keep white at the hoist and the two halves equal.
  • Retain the detailed George Cross and its red outline.
  • Identify the blue-canton image as historical.
  • Keep the merchant ensign and square naval jack clearly labelled.
  • Do not turn an interpretive vector into a claimed certified construction standard.

White may disappear against a white slide or page. A thin neutral display border outside the flag can clarify its edge, provided it is understood as a page treatment and is not described as part of the national design.

Which flag terms help explain Malta’s design?

Hoist means the attachment edge, fly means the free edge, and canton identifies an upper corner, here the upper hoist. Fimbriation means a narrow edging, such as the red border around Malta’s George Cross. An ensign identifies a vessel’s nationality, while a jack is a separate shipboard flag.

Frequently asked questions

What does Malta’s flag look like?

Malta’s flag is a vertical white-and-red bicolor with a George Cross near the upper hoist. The white and red areas have equal widths. The cross is outlined in red and belongs entirely within the white half; no coat of arms or eight-pointed cross replaces it.

What are the proportions of Malta’s flag?

The standard flag is three units wide and two units high, a width-to-height ratio of 3:2. The same shape is described as 2:3 when height is listed first. Each colored half occupies one-half of the total width and extends through the full height.

What is Malta’s merchant flag?

Malta’s merchant flag is a red rectangle with a white border and a white Maltese cross at its center. It is a separate maritime design, not the white-and-red national bicolor. Transport Malta also states that the merchant flag should not be used as a courtesy flag.

What flags do Malta’s military vessels use?

Government guidance assigns the national flag as the ensign of Maltese military vessels. It also describes a separate square jack: a red-edged George Cross in a white central square, surrounded by red with a white Maltese cross in each corner. An ensign and a jack serve different shipboard positions.
