Satin Folds: The Flag’s New Materials

Close-up of the Indian flag in rich satin fabric, folds of saffron, white and green with the navy Ashoka Chakra

What the flag may be made of

The camera gets close enough here to make the flag a landscape — satin ridges of saffron, a valley of white where the Chakra rides, green falling away below. Fabric this glossy announces its own story: this is not homespun.

For most of the republic’s life it would have had to be. Then the December 2021 amendment to the Flag Code opened the field: machine-made flags, and polyester among the permitted materials, may now fly alongside hand-spun khadi. The change put flags within every budget — and months later, the Har Ghar Tiranga summer showed what a country of affordable flags looks like.
