Threads of Service: Armed Forces Flag Day

Fine mesh-like waves of saffron and green crossing on white around a small blue Ashoka Chakra

The seventh of December

Woven from hairline threads, these waves look less painted than stitched — thousands of strands agreeing on two colours. It is a fitting texture for the one flag day that is literally worn.

Every 7 December since 1949, India has observed Armed Forces Flag Day, honouring the soldiers, sailors and airmen who stand behind the flag the rest of the year. Small token flags are pinned to lapels in exchange for contributions to the welfare of service members and their families — the tricolour, for one day, worn as thread and gratitude.
