The Republic on Parade: Kartavya Path

Watercolour map of India in saffron and green with white doves and a large 26th January India Republic Day lockup

Where the flag reviews the republic

The map runs to watercolour here, doves lifting off the Punjab, the great 26 anchoring the corner — art that treats Republic Day as a feeling. The day itself, though, has a very exact street address.

Each 26 January the flag presides over the Republic Day parade down Kartavya Path in New Delhi — the ceremonial avenue known as Rajpath until its renaming in September 2022 — as the republic marches past in review. The season it opens closes three evenings later, when the Beating Retreat ceremony of 29 January lowers the flags to massed bands.
