On Independence Day the flag is hoisted: it climbs the pole from below, rising as the anthem begins, recalling the raising of a new nation in 1947. On Republic Day it is unfurled: already fixed at the top, folded, it is opened out — the nation was free; in 1950 it simply gave itself a Constitution. Same mast, two meanings.
