A country in a thousand lights

Look closely and the map dissolves into hundreds of separate lights — saffron across the north, green through the south, the Chakra steady at the centre. It is a picture built the way the country is: countless small brightnesses agreeing on one shape.

Three days a year, that agreement fills every street. On Republic Day, 26 January, and Independence Day, 15 August, the tricolour rises over schools, homes and public squares across this whole map — and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October completes the trio of national days. Since the Flag Code of 2002, any citizen may honour those days, or any other, by flying the flag at home with dignity.
