The Flag on the Pole: Every Element in View

The design, plain to see

Against a bare white ground, this picture reads like the flag’s own design sheet. Nothing competes for the eye: three equal horizontal bands — saffron over white over green — and the navy Chakra set precisely at the centre of the white, every proportion visible at a glance as the cloth lifts off the pole.

That design is exact by law and by history. The flag always takes the 3 : 2 proportion. The Constituent Assembly adopted it on 22 July 1947, adapting the Swaraj flag of the freedom movement — the spinning wheel at its centre giving way to the Ashoka Chakra, the ancient “wheel of the law.” The design is credited to Pingali Venkayya.
