Pigment Alone Cannot Make an Octopus Blue or Silver
Chromatophores hold only yellow, red, brown and black pigments, so no combination of them can produce the blue-green sheen a living octopus sometimes shows. Two other cell types do that work: iridophores, stacks of protein plates that split light by interference, and leucophores, which scatter whatever light falls on them and so look red in red light and blue in blue. Part of octopus color is not paint at all. It is optics.
